Road Studs

  • Halifax Cats Eye Road Studs

The cat’s eye is a retro-reflective safety device used in road marking and was the first of a range of raised pavement markers. It originated in the UK in 1933 and is today used all over the world.

It consists (in its original form) of two pairs of reflective glass spheres set into a white rubber dome, mounted in a cast iron housing. This is the kind that marks the centre of the road, with one pair of cat’s eyes showing in each direction. A single-ended form has become widely used in other colours at road margins and as lane dividers. Cat’s eyes are particularly valuable in fog and are resistant to damage from snow ploughs.

A key feature of the cat’s eye is the flexible rubber dome which is occasionally deformed by the passage of traffic. A fixed rubber wiper cleans the surface of the reflectors as they sink below the surface of the road (the base tends to hold water after a shower of rain, making this process even more efficient). The rubber dome is protected from impact damage by metal ‘kerbs’ – which also give tactile and audible feedback for wandering drivers.

The “Catseve” & The European Standard.
The Catseye has been tested and certificated to:
BSEN 1463-1:1998 Road Marking Materials-Retro reflecting Road Studs Part 1: Initial performance requirements.
BS EN 1463-2: 2000 Road Marking Materials-Retro reflecting Road Studs Part 2: Road Test.

The tables below gives the full classifications and dimensions as laid down in the standards:
BS EN 1463 – Part 2 Road Test Performance Specifications:

Performance for Road Users- Primary Assessment Class S1
Performance for Road Users -Night-time Visibility Class R1

    Type of Roadstud:

LongLife and LifeLite 101 Stimsonite uni-or-duo directional

The Longlife 101 was approved for use by the Department of Transport in January 1997 and is recommended for use in areas of very heavy traffic.

Reflex is provided by Stimsonite proven glass faced prismatic system – ensuring both high intial reflex values and because of the excellent qualities of the glass face, reflex values are mainted over long periods.

The reflector is protected within the frame of the housing where the main impact from vehicles is taken by the side rails, therefore also enhancing the reflector’s self clearing properties.

Typical initial reflex values exceed the requirements of BS873 Part 4 and EN1463. 1 by a factor of 2 and are significantly greater than traditional depressible inset markers.

Available in white, red and green, the LongLife 101 is a truly cost effective marker making a significant contribution to enhance the delineation and safety standards of our roads.

Highest reflectivity : With a Specific Intensity of 3.0 cd/fc, LifeLite 101 markers provide the industry’s highest visibility guidance in wet or dry weather coditions, with full reflective strength from distance of 1,000 feet or more.

Improved ploghability: A low ramp angle and narrower design provide better ploughability. Smaller impact area, round corners and low profile designcombine to reduce reflector damage.

Low Installation and Maintenance Costs : LifeLife 101′s narrower anchoring base saves on the cost of pavement-cutting blades and epoxy adhesive. The LifeLite 944 reflector is also easy to replace.

Longest Life Reflector : Unique glassface design allows vehicle tyres to better wipe reflector clean and extends its life cycle.

Guaranteed Recyclability : Marker castings returned to Stimsonite can be economically cleaned and reconditioned as new.

    3M Marker Series

The 3M Marker Series 290 is an improved permanent surface mounted reflecting road stud that has been approved by the Department of Transport for any use in any position on all non concrete road surfaces.

3M has combined innovative technologies such as advanced optical design, hard ceramic coatings and computer-aided construction design to produce a highly visible, long lasting system that stands a cut above existing road studs.

Availabe in white, amber, red and green, and all combinations. The marker’s high performance lens yields high brightness retroreflected light when illuminated by car headlights, with relective values in excess of the requirements of British Standard BS837 Part 4.
